A deadly train crash in the southern state of Oaxaca has resulted in the deaths of at least 13 people, an incident expected to reignite critical opposition regarding the speed and handling of the country's key public works projects.
The accident took place on the trans-isthmus railway, a line built to connect the Atlantic and Pacific Ocean across the thinnest stretch of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This endeavor was intended to offer an different freight railway path to the Panama Canal, aimed at driving economic development in the area.
“We are going to meticulously determine the reasons behind this incident,” stated the national leader.
The president confirmed that, of the some 250 passengers on board, another 98 were wounded, with five of those in grave condition. The president stated plans to travel to Oaxaca to meet those involved.
Major Initiative of Previous Administration
The Interoceanic Train was a cornerstone infrastructure project of the immediate past president, whose presidency finished the year before. This rail line was closely associated with his government's developmental vision for the southeastern region.
Another ambitious rail project from that time, a passenger and freight circuit around the Yucatán Peninsula, was also integral to the wider plan to kickstart the economic fortunes of a relatively disadvantaged part of the country.
Project Execution and Safety Concerns
The development of both railway systems was managed by the nation's military, marking a notable increase of its responsibilities in public projects. They were built at an rapid speed, defying expectations to be at least partly opened before the end of that government.
However, this rushed timetable had concurrently raised significant questions over operational security.
- Sunday's crash was the third occurrence on the Interoceanic Train in the current year.
- This involves an earlier accident this month when a train struck a truck at a level crossing.
- The other major rail project has also experienced two non-deadly derailments.
Appeals for Investigation and Halt
In the aftermath of the tragedy, the leader of a major opposition party called for an prompt halt in the construction and operation of all similar projects.
This stoppage was proposed pending a thorough safety audit. The party declared that the loss of life "requires prompt explanations."
In reply, the national leader asserted that the train had been running in full accordance with all security protocols. Assurances were given that the government would be "accountable" in both the development and management of these strategic projects.
