Crawley Claims Ignorance of Captain Stokes' Controversial 'Weak Men' Comments

England opener Zak Crawley suggested he was not familiar with statements from captain Stokes regarding the team environment not being "those lacking fortitude".

Stokes made this message in several conversations following England's defeat in the second Ashes series versus Australia earlier this month.

In the lead-up to the third Test, where England now face a series loss at the earliest opportunity, Stokes stated he had allowed his sentiment to "circulate freely" within the playing group.

"I've done all the talking over the past two days that I needed to have done," remarked the England leader.

But, after Crawley made 85 on the fourth day in Adelaide, he stated: "I didn't see that."

"I wasn't actively searching for it. Our approach is to take anything stated in the media with some skepticism," he added.

Raw Conversations and Steady Philosophy

Stokes made the "weak men" observation subsequent to his side suffered a loss in Brisbane to go two matches behind.

The England squad subsequently went on a break to a Queensland resort in the gap between the second and third Tests.

Prior to the Adelaide contest, he said his team had held "raw" conversations and he had asked them to "show a bit of dog" in their effort to stay alive in the Ashes battle.

Nevertheless, Crawley stated the messaging from the captain and coach McCullum had stayed in line with their prior tenure in leadership.

"It's been very positive, unchanged," noted the opener. "It's just trying to be optimistic, play our way, with lots of freedom. It felt like we could do an extraordinary feat going into this game."

Australia Close of Rapid Ashes Triumph

The opener's wicket late on Saturday came during a crucial triple-strike by Australian spinner Nathan Lyon.

The spinner's three wickets in 20 deliveries – he also bowled Harry Brook and Ben Stokes – meant England six down for 207 chasing a notional target of 435.

This means, Australia require four wickets on the final day to move to an unassailable 3-0 lead with three Tests.

A loss will extend the English team's drought in Australia to 18 Tests and condemn them to a fourth successive overseas Ashes defeat.

The current battle will be completed in just 11 days of play – with England losing the first two Tests in two and four days respectively.

The last time 1921, when the Australians sealed victory in the UK in eight days, has the outcome of the urn been decided more swiftly. Australia have also triumphed in 11 days on two other occasions in the 21st century.

"This is disheartening," admitted Crawley. "Our goal was to regain the Ashes and we're staring down the barrel now."

"There remains significant pride at stake and we'll certainly approach it with that mindset," he continued.

"The challenge has been difficult. Australia is a formidable team. It was inevitably hard coming here to face them. They were the front-runners and they've proven why."

Ollie Pope's Place Under Scrutiny

Although Crawley's performance in Adelaide likely secures doubts about his short-term place in the side, Pope looks under immense pressure for his spot in the Melbourne Test starting December 26th.

Pope was out for 17 in England's second knock on day four, extending his modest returns against Australia.

Across 16 Ashes innings, Pope has never made a half-century and averages 17.62.

Only one other England player in over a century – Dennis Amiss – has featured as many times in the top six in the Ashes and returned a poorer average.

However, the opener said any notion his teammate is being scrutinised comes from "the media" – meaning the press – "and not within the team."

"The squad is fully aware how good of a player he is," said Crawley. "He has had a productive year to be frank."

"He has played some really good knocks. This is talk externally. There is no discussion like that regarding Pope amongst the players," Crawley concluded.
