Federal authorities have entered the fray in a lawsuit initiated by California Republicans, seeking to prevent the state's newly approved electoral boundaries.
This legal action, filed in federal court, challenges the redistricting plan championed by the state's Democratic governor, which was developed in reaction against a GOP redistricting effort in Texas.
"The state's redistricting scheme represents a blatant attempt to seize control that violates civil rights and undermines the electoral system," declared the US attorney general.
Democrats have voiced assurance that the new maps will survive court challenges.
"The plaintiffs were defeated in the election and soon they will face defeat in the judicial system," commented a spokesperson for Governor Newsom.
Legal Basis
The lawsuit claims that California's map wrongfully utilized race as a factor to significantly advantage Hispanic voters in violation of the US Constitution.
"Race cannot be used as a proxy to advance political interests, but that is exactly what the California General Assembly did with Proposition 50," stated a senior official from the DOJ's civil rights unit.
Political Context
The legal battle constitutes the most significant response by Democrats in the ongoing redistricting war that started with Texas and has spread across various parts of the country.
Unlike other states, where GOP-controlled legislatures have implemented partisan maps, California's plan required voter approval, which it obtained with approximately two-thirds of the vote.
Wider Consequences
The Democratic party need to gain just a small number of GOP-controlled House seats to take control of the House of Representatives in next year's midterm election.
The party that holds the controlling share will influence the remaining period of the current administration, deciding if a GOP-controlled legislature will continue to deliver its political program or face resistance, investigations and possible additional obstacles.
